John F. Lewis

May 17, 1952 — March 24, 2023

Mountain City, TN

John F. Lewis, age 70, passed away on March 24, 2023 in Nashville, Tennessee after a brief illness. Born on May 17, 1952 in Cold Spring, NY to Esther and John Lewis, he was a 1970 graduate of Haldane High School. After obtaining his Associates Degree from Dutchess Community College, he worked for many years in various roles at Metro North Railroad.

He was a devoted lover of all animals, feeding and caring for stray cats and some of whom eventually became house pets—including “Chairman Mao” and “Baby”. His favorite, perhaps, was his beloved dog Milo who he will now reunite with in heaven.

A reformed hippie, rabble rouser, and kind-hearted soul he was known to say that he could get into trouble minding his own business in his living room. And those who knew him would think that wasn’t too far off the mark.

He loved the outdoors, military history, cowboy songs, and tales of the Old West. More than once he would say he belonged in a different era, and now he belongs to them all.

He is survived by his niece, Johnna and her children Theo and Kaleigh; his nephew Edward and his children; and other extended family and close friends all of whom he loved dearly. We will all miss him.

He was predeceased by his parents, and his stepfather Doug. He was also predeceased by his sister Fran and her husband—his good friend—Paul.

Interment will be in the Cold Spring Cemetery during a private ceremony at the convenience of the family.

Please consider a donation in John’s name to the Putnam Humane Society in Carmel, NY.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Clinton Funeral Home- Cold Spring
