Margaret Whelan

WHELAN, Margaret – of Cold Spring, NY, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2023. A strong and caring woman, very involved in issues and her community, Margaret was predeceased by her loving husband, Eugene F. Whelan.  Loving mother of Francis Whelan, and loving step-mother of Wendy Vega, Jane Sullivan, and the late Elisabeth Whelan; loving grandmother of Kathleen D. Sullivan; loving mother-in-law of James K. Sullivan and the late Cid R. Blasini.  She also leaves behind sister-in-law Mary Jane Woram and many nieces and nephews. After growing up on Long Island and moving to Manhattan as a young professional, Margaret flourished on the Upper West Side, including as a member of the community school board.  Later, she was executive director of Reading Reform Foundation, where she supported the mission of helping children learn to read.  After retiring to Cold Spring, Margaret became active in the local community and spent much time in her beloved garden, a joy she had first discovered while vacationing on Fire Island.   Margaret loved living in Cold Spring and forged many strong friendships there. She will be missed by many.
