Mary Rose Powell

August 8, 1930 — October 8, 2022

Cold Spring

Mary (Marie) Rose Powell passed away Saturday, October 8, 2022. Mary was born August 8, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Charles R. Powell. She is survived by her children: Charles Powell, Mary (Powell) Bishop and Michael Powell. She was blessed with four grandchildren: Michael Powell, David Powell, Jaime Bishop and Robert Bishop; and two great-grandchildren: Megan Powell and Michael Powell.

Mary was first and foremost a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and was devoted to serving her family. The best part of herself was what she gave away in the form of compassion, laughter and generosity. She was an avid reader and animal lover, and enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking, and dancing to the Golden Oldies. Her philanthropic heart supported countless charities and organizations throughout her lifetime, and she was devoted to giving back to her community. She first started volunteering as a Navy wife in the Chaplain Navy Wives club and Navy Relief Society. In the ‘60s, she was a den mother in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and a Brownies Scout and Girl Scout troop leader. In the ‘70s she volunteered at the VA Hospital at Castle Point, NY. But she was most passionate and proud of her volunteering work at Julia L. Butterfield Hospital, where she spent over 20 years supporting the staff, doctors and patients, volunteering on average 1,000 hours per year. Her community affiliations also included Our Lady of Loretto Church, the Highland Garden Club and the North Highlands Ladies Auxiliary.

Mary will be remembered for her incredible love of her family and friends, her tremendous energy and her compassion and kindness to others.

A wake was held on October 14, at Clinton’s Funeral Home in Cold Spring, NY followed by interment at Cold Spring Cemetery.

We will think about you always,
You will never be forgotten.
We will hold you close within
our hearts
And there you will remain,
To walk and guide us through
our lives,
Until we meet again.
