Cold Spring

Peter Goetz died peacefully at his home in Cold Spring, NY. He was 89. He leaves behind a prodigious void in the lives of his wife Barbara Eliran, his children, Andrew, Lucy, and Jane, and his adoring network of friends. And while we are all touched by a deep sorrow, we are equally fueled by Peter’s incredible lust for life and adventure.

Peter leaves behind an impressive legacy as an attorney with more than 50 years in the construction and real estate fields, and as a founding partner of the firm Goetz & Fitzpatrick.  Nominated by his peers for his expertise in the areas of construction law and litigation, Peter has been named to the New York Edition of New York Magazine’s The Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers consistently through the years.

While Peter was understandably proud of all his many professional accomplishments and accolades, it was Peter’s grit and tenacity, and his passions for flying, sailing, tennis, skiing, travel, and being surrounded by family and friends that Peter found most rewarding… and of course his beloved dogs.

An avid and accomplished pilot since his college days at RPI, flying was not only an integral part of Peter’s life but also a great metaphor for it. The skies offered unlimited adventure of discovery.  Not only were there weekend trips to Nantucket for a lobster roll, but there were also multi-day flights with the family to the Caribbean for a sailing adventure. And a trip to South America in his 70’s that defied logic - but which most certainly became a celebration of triumph, determination and joy.  Things mostly went smoothly mid-air but from time-to-time could go very wrong; Peter responded by always using his wit, skill and expertise to land safely.  Peter soared in his plane, and in his life.

It's almost impossible to catalogue all of Peter’s accomplishments and passions – there were so many.  Impressive as they were, it was Peter’s devotion to family and friends, and his biting sense of humor that we will remember, cherish and miss most.

A Celebration of Life is being planned and date, time and venue will be posted by the family when details are confirmed.
