Stephen Gerard Tomann, 74, passed away at home in Garrison, NY, on Saturday, August 29, 2026. He was born on October 15, 1951, to Margaret and Kenneth Tomann in Brooklyn, NY. He lived in Maspeth, Queens, until 1954, when the family moved to Garrison, NY.

Stephen was quiet, humble, and kind. He was devoted to serving his family and to preserving the family home and orchards at Post Road Farm. He was planning and supervising house and garden projects until the day he passed.

An artist and musician, he painted everything from landscapes to house trim, played the piano, saxophone, and clarinet, and sang in styles ranging from opera to doo-wop. He was an avid reader, particularly of first-person military history, loved growing roses, and was a lifelong Yankees fan. He built and collected model trains, cars, and toy soldiers, and loved restoring antique cars, especially his 1949 Plymouth. Stephen was a man of strong faith with a deep commitment to his community; over the years he served as a lector at St. Joseph Chapel, worked as curator at the Putnam County Historical Society Museum (now the Putnam History Museum), and served as president of Putnam Highlands Audubon Society. He will be remembered for his steady counsel, quick humor, and loyal friendship.

Stephen graduated from Our Lady of Loretto Elementary School in Cold Spring and Xavier High School in Manhattan. He attended Boston College, later graduating from Ladycliff College with a B.A. in Art. He taught art in the Highland Falls School District, at Garrison School, and at the Malcolm Gordon School. He earned a J.D. from Pace Law School in 1986 and worked as a trial attorney in Manhattan and White Plains before working in general practice law in Cold Spring, NY. He was Town Justice for the Town of Philipstown from 1996 to 2024.

Stephen is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary (née Callaghan); his children, Peter (Kathyrine, née Thorpe), Andrea, and Margaret; his grandchildren, Grace, Meghan, Emily, and Maura; his brothers, Paul, John, Mark (Karen), and Neal; his sisters, Kathleen Egan, Patricia McGarry (Denis), and Ann Erb (Robert); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, and godchildren. He is loved and missed beyond measure.

A private funeral service will be held at a later date.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Post Road Farm on Saturday, September 26 from 1PM – 5PM, 765 Old Albany Post Road, Garrison, NY, 10524.
