Timothy Jarl D’Acquisto, whose esy charm and infectious laugh was well known in Garrison and Cold Spring, passed away in the early hours of July 11, 2026 after a long illness.

Born in 1942 in Monterey, California to Dorothea Gunderson D’Acquisto, a nurse and lighting stand-in for Ingrid Bergman and Victor D’Acquisto, a stunt man and abalone diver whose family owned a fishing fleet on Monterey Wharf, Tim not only inherited theirelegance and good looks, but their love of the water.

When he was 12 years old his family moved to Seattle, Washington where Tim thrived. He became a Sea Scout, graduated from West Seattle High School, worked for Fish and Wildlife tagging salmon on the Snake River, worked for Stinson Timber and became a firefighter in the Olympic Range.

When he returned to Seattle he worked as a potter, making the first cups and bowls for a new café named Starbucks CoWee in Pike Place Market, while studying at the University of Washington. It was during this time he and his first wife, JL Aboitiz, had their two daughters, Carmen and Amy.

Upon their divorce Tim moved east, first to Stony Creek NY, where he continued to make pottery, then to New York City, in the early 1970’s. He secured free lodging as a building super in the West Village, studied art at the Art Students League with Leo Manzo, and began a long career as a carpenter and builder alongside many many artists. He later moved to Soho, the Tribeca, where he met his wife Grace in 1985. They married in 1991 and moved to Garrison, splitting their time between there and Seattle, where they had purchased a wooden boat circa 1942, and on which they lived and took several trips to the San Juan Islands and Puget Sound.

Tim brought his keen eye to all of his projects, most prominently his art. He was a founding member of Buster Levi Gallery, and his work, whether painting, constructions or photography, reflected his wry and often surprising sense of humor as well as a deep melancholy. He was, above all, an artist.

Tim is survived by his wife of 35 years, Grace Kennedy, His daughters Carmen D’Acquisto and Amy D’Acquisto of Seattle, three grandchildren, Hannah Kessel, of North Dakota, Candido D’Acquisto and Isabel Slepski, both of Seattle, as well as four greatgrandchildren, Charlotte, Kennedy, Piper and Milo Kessel, all of North Dakota.

He is also survived by his younger brother Tony D’Acquisto of Bremerton Washington, and his sister Dea D’Acquisto Conway of Bellingham Washington.
